Amber Groomes, Ph.D.Psychologist
I received my Ph.D. in School Psychology from the University of Texas in Austin, and I am a licensed Clinical Psychologist in Maryland. Additionally, I am a certified provider of Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, an evidenced-based treatment for traumatized youth. I work with children, adolescents, and young adults to address a wide range of behavioral and emotional concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma, family or relationship challenges, life transitions, self-harm, and impulsive or self-defeating behaviors. I have trained and worked in schools, community mental health, juvenile detention facilities, residential treatment, and private practice.
I use an integrative, collaborative, and warm therapeutic approach that utilizes techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, and Family Systems orientations. My approach to treatment has been described as validating, client-driven, and highly practical. I have specialized training in the diagnosis and treatment of youth, with particular expertise in working with adolescents. I am passionate about helping tweens, teens, and emerging adults to navigate the increasingly stressful demands of balancing school, family, friends, and personal wellness. For adults, I treat chronic emotional difficulties by combining insight-oriented, trauma-informed, and skills-based approaches.
If you are a teen or young adult interested in learning skills to manage intense emotions or destructive urges, I can provide DBT-informed treatment. DBT incorporates skills for mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, distress tolerance, and emotional regulation.
